Big news on the car insurance front recently?  Have you just purchased a new car, moved to Ohio or had a child get their license?  Well, here’s a primer on a few quick things you need to know:

1. You need insurance BEFORE you drive

In Ohio, it’s illegal to drive a motor vehicle without insurance or proof of financial responsibility, even if you just got your license.  This may sound simple, but it’s true.  Also, as we’ve covered before, your insurance needs to be set up before you drive.

2. You need enough coverage.

Regardless of where you live in the country, before you call up a national insurance company, you should make sure you know the specifics of your state’s rules and minimum coverage amounts.  In Ohio, the required minimum for Bodily Injury Liability Coverage is $12,500 per person injured and $25,000 for all the persons injured in a single accident.  There is also a minimum for Property Damage Liability Coverage – $7,500.

3. You need the right amount of coverage for you.

Even though there are pre-determined minimums, this may not be enough coverage for you, especially if you are an individual with assets, or a family to protect.  Compared to many other states, the $12,500/$25,000 limits described above are actually below their minimums.  It’s a good idea to talk to an agent that can recommend the right amount of coverage for you.  Because if you are involved in an accident, you’ll want to keep your mind at ease, and know that you have enough coverage.

4. Beware of offers that are too good to be true.

Your car insurance is very important.  If you hear of an offer that’s so low you can’t believe it, you may want to check twice.  Your agent will be the one you call in distress, so you’ll want to make sure you trust them.  Before you get your hopes up over any crazy offers, or fork over money, make sure everything is in order.  Like many other products or services you routinely purchase, when it comes to car insurance, you get what you pay for.

In addition to these basic principles, there are many factors that will determine how much you pay.  A good insurance agency will look into all possible discounts on your behalf and make sure you get the coverage you need, at a price that works for you.
